Cadet Grooming Policy

JROTC is a uniformed organization in which cadets are evaluated, in part, on how they wear the prescribed uniform and maintain their personal appearance. A neat and well-groomed appearance contributes to pride, discipline, teamwork, and the overall effectiveness of the unit.

Hair

• Hair must be neat, clean, and conservatively styled.
• Hair may be closely cropped or shaved.
• Hair length and bulk may not interfere with the proper wear of military headgear.
• Hair colors must appear natural and may not be extreme.
• Hair falling over the eyebrows or ears must be pulled back.
• Hair accessories should be transparent or similar in color to the hair and worn inconspicuously.
• Headbands may not exceed 1½ inches in width.
• Ponytails, one braid, or two braids are permitted in all uniforms.
• Multiple neat hairstyles are authorized.

Facial Hair

• Sideburns must be neatly trimmed and may not extend below the lowest part of the exterior ear opening.
• Cadets must be clean-shaven, except for authorized mustaches.

Fingernails

• Fingernails must be clean and neatly trimmed.
• Female cadets may wear matching nail polish of any color.
• Acrylic nails may not extend more than ½ inch beyond the fingertip.

Hygiene & Tattoos

• Cadets are expected to maintain good personal hygiene.
• Tattoos are permitted unless they are extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist.
• Tattoos that are prejudicial to good order and discipline are prohibited during uniformed activities.
• Facial tattoos do not automatically prohibit participation in JROTC.

Cosmetics

• Female cadets may wear lipstick in conservative, non-extreme shades.
